Why reading habits are important for children

Updated: May 6, 2019

Never underestimate the habit of reading, especially when inculcated in the young. It stimulates imagination, creates discipline and builds confidence in the reader. Not to mention the wealth of other benefits, opening a world beyond what is experienced by the individual.

Like any other habit, good or bad, reading is a habit. A child can only begin with little steps, and a dollop of coaxing and your input in the process - for instance, reading aloud for a few minutes every day to start with.

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his needs, is good for him.'' —Maya Angelou

How to create the reading habit?

Kinds of books

There are books that look merely readable, there are those that look so formidable you keep them at a distance, and then there are books that lure you to their pages.

If you are someone who finds it difficult to start reading, pick up a book that 'calls to you.' It may be a genre, or simply a title, or even the cover, but you are tempted to give it a go!

Time to read

Wonderful! Now, find out what is the best time for you to indulge in this habit.

Are you someone who picks up a book on the way to school? Or perhaps you like to read at bedtime? Again, you may be one of those who have their book to their faces while chowing a meal.

Find out what suits you.
